Spanish Business Activities Tax: choosing the correct IAE code
An exemption from paying IAE does not mean that the activity can remain undeclared. The census registration, activity code and related obligations must reflect the real business.
Short answer
Spanish IAE: registration, codes and exemptions
Individuals are generally exempt from the IAE charge and certain entities may also qualify, including by reference to turnover. The activity must still be classified and reported correctly, with the VAT or IGIC, withholding and other consequences checked.
Registration and payment differ
A census obligation may exist even when no IAE amount is payable.
The code describes the activity
Selection follows what is actually sold or supplied, not merely the trading name.
One company may need several codes
Different business lines can carry different classifications and obligations.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Must an exempt sole trader still register the activity?
Normally yes. The activity and classification are reported through the tax census even if no IAE charge is due.
Can one code cover everything?
Only if it genuinely covers every activity. A broader offer may require more than one code.
Is the tax authority search tool conclusive?
It is a useful starting point, but hybrid or new activities may require closer analysis.
